Surrounded by Monkeys on the Rock of Gibraltar

We cross the border into Gibraltar, a British territory, and a group of us immediately hops on a small bus to travel up the Rock of Gibraltar, one of the pillars of Hercules. The mini bus wound up the small roads making periodic stops for us to capture the views.

At one point we were able to stop and watch a plane taking off. Now I know what you are thinking, "Andrea, haven't you seen planes takeoff before?" Well, yes, yes I have, but this runway is smack in the middle of the town. When a plane is preparing to takeoff or land in Gibraltar, all traffic is stopped to clear the runway. Additionally, the runway isn't very long, the wide blue water is very close, so the takeoff is very quick.

After reaching the top of the mountain, we wandered into St. Michael's cave; that is a place you could easily get lost in. The formations inside were spectacular.

Outside the cave, there were monkeys, lots and lots of monkeys. One was chilling on top of the souvenir shop, surveying the crowds. A bunch were perched on top of the cars and mini buses, hoping for a tasty treat from the unassuming tourist. Note: Not a good idea to have any form of plastic with you at all; they will come after you!

There was the head monkey, very very large, who would steal the food from all of the other monkeys; I quickly understand why it was so massive.

Baby monkeys were scattered around, some hanging on their moms, others beginning to wander on their own. One poor little monkey was left on the trunk of the bus, abandoned by its greedy mother who received some bread from a tour guide. He started squealing, a high screeching noise, poor thing; he quickly climbed down when the vehicle started moving.

It was a fun experience being around the animals, although I was very thankful none of them decided to hug me or think I was food. One poor gentleman was standing beside a mini bus, just watching the monkeys, when all of a sudden he had a monkey on his head. The mini bus was beginning to move and I guess the monkey did not want to go for a ride and hopped right onto the man. The gentleman was completely unfazed by the entire experience, saying he was around animals all the time. Unfortunately no picture of this because it happened so quickly.
