Siamo andati a Venezia

Last Saturday I went with my friend and classmate Syenny to Venice. Our morning began quite early since it was only a day trip with a train ride at 8:50. The journey took about 2 hours, thankfully we were one of the first ones to board the train because it was packed. The few stations into our journey a family from Australia joined our group of seats, so we were amused by six-month old twins, who were adorable.

Venice was a welcome sight after leaving the train; the weather was excellent, clear blue skies and a bright round sun. There were lots of people everywhere, but not too many that I couldn't get to the decent views.

My main reason for traveling to Venice, besides it being a beautiful city, was to visit La Biennale, which is a major contemporary art exhibition. My favorite venue was the Arsenale, but it may have been because by the time we arrived at the Giardini we were completely exhausted. There was one piece that really caught my eye, it was a group of ceramics with alternating lines of black and white around each piece; the pieces were arranged on a boxes all around the room on display.

There were two really neat exhibits at the Giardini. One is a tank-like machine with a treadmill on the top. When a person is running on the treadmill the wheels move. The second was an organ playing bancomat (ATM). When you withdraw money, it produces music notes.

After visiting the Giardini, we hopped a water taxi back to Piazza San Marco to take pictures and walk back to the train station...well really it was more a run/walk to the station because we wanted to catch the 19:50 train so we didn't have to wait until the next train at 23:00. The day in Venice was a nice break from school, rather exciting to just be a traveler for a bit. I did go a bit camera happy, so I am trying to select some of the best pictures from the trip.

Hi Andrea: I have just spent some time reading your blog and I have signed up to keep informed. I enjoyed your pictures and the commentary. Please tell me where you got your first Masters and the focus of your Bologna program. Are you doing the work through Carnegie Mellon? I am very proud of you and your accomplishments. My daughter spent time in Florence while in college and fell in love with Italy. I, too, have visited Italy and have the happiest memories of the people and the country. My husband and I travelled extensively in our work and I am now trying to provide opportunities for our grandchildren to widen their horizons. Our granddaughter is studying Japanese in high school! So different from my school days when our offerings were French and Latin. I look forward to reading more of your adventures as time goes on. Thank you for keeping in touch.

  3. Hi Isobel.
Glad you were able to access the blog, it is wonderful to hear from you. My first masters was at Carnegie Mellon in Arts Management. It is the part of a double degree program between Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Bologna. Here in Bologna, I am studying Arts Management with an international/global focus, primarily viewing the European side of the cultural industry. We end up with two masters after the completion of the thesis at the end. I will be finished in Italy come June, then moving to a new place to complete an unknown internship at this point.

I am glad you have been able to visit this beautiful country, I hope to make it to Florence soon. I wish your granddaughter the best of luck with Japanese, that is another amazing country, I hope she is able to visit.

    Keep in touch! Andrea
